Fun Friday Question: Thanksgiving!

In the United States of America, we celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November every year. Thanksgiving is a day to celebrate all the things we are thankful for in our lives. Usually, people gather together with their families and eat a big meal. Traditionally, people eat turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing and more. They usually eat pumpkin pie for dessert. Why do they eat these foods? These are foods that can easily be found during the autumn season, which is harvest time in America. Today’s Question: What are you thankful for?

Miss Sarah’s Answer: I am thankful for many things! I am always thankful for my family, my friends, and my health. This year I am thankful that I am in Indonesia. It has always been my dream to live overseas and now I can have that experience. I am especially thankful to be at SMAN 1 Ngunut – I think I have the best students in Indonesia! I am thankful that my students can also be friends with me and that we can do many fun activities together. Being able to spend time together makes me feel like Indonesia is home. :)

Fun Friday Question #4

Hi students! Fun Friday Questions are back! Every Friday one of the English teachers will post a question on this blog. We will give our answer to the question. Then, you give your answer in a comment (“leave a reply”). This is a fun way to practice your writing. Don’t be shy, it is okay to make mistakes. Just try your best!

Today’s Question: If you could change one thing about Indonesia, what would you change?

Miss Sarah’s Answer: If I could change one thing about Indonesia, I would provide more effective health care. Many people in East Java have access to health care. If they are sick, they can go to the doctor or go to the hospital. But this is not the case in every part of Indonesia. Many people die because they do not have adequate nutrition, clean water, or the ability to go to the doctor when they are sick. Better health care means more people will able to live healthy and happy lives. In addition, more health care means more jobs for doctors, nurses, and health care workers. More jobs will help the economy. In conclusion, I think more effective health care is a serious issue and is important in all areas of Indonesia.

Indonesia is a very big country. There are many areas that do not have access to adequate health care.

Good health practices also means wearing gloves before you touch someone’s body fluids (like blood) or washing your hands before you eat.

This is an example of health care in West Papua. Do you think is adequate health care? Why or why not?

What is your opinion? You can respond to my answer to tell me your opinion about health care in Indonesia…or you can write your own answer to the question “what would you change about Indonesia.” Or both! It’s up to you. :) Happy writing!

Happy Halloween!

Hello SMAN 1 Ngunut! It has been a long time since I (Miss Sarah) updated this blog. I’m sorry, I have been so busy. But today I have pictures from the Halloween party we had in Class XA on October 31st. Every year in the USA we celebrate Halloween on October 31st. It’s not really a holiday because everyone still has to go to work and school, but it’s more of a tradition. Usually children dress up in costumes and go to their neighbor’s house to “trick or treat.” They knock on the door and when the neighbor opens the door they say “trick or treat!” and the neighbor gives them candy. It’s similar to Lebaran when children get money from their neighbors. :) Adults like to dress up too, and sometimes they have Halloween parties with their friends where they all dress up and celebrate scary things and watch horror movies. English Club Announcements

If you are a member of English Club, here are some important announcements!

1. This week we will have elections to pick the new leaders of English club. You must ask Bu Christin for a ballot. Then, write down the names of who you think should be president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. Everyone should vote!

2. Remember to save money to buy English Club jackets. You can bring the money to the meetings every week.

3. Starting next week, English Club members will have journals. You will need a notebook that is only for English Club. You can write anything in your journal. Yesterday in English Club we discussed two questions: 1) What are 5 important things that describe who you are/your identity? 2) What is a story of an obstacle you have overcome? You can answer these questions in your journal. We talked about these questions after listening to our new theme song – “Watch Me Shine.” Listen to it! :)

4. Think of ideas of what you would like to do in English Club. You can comment on this post “leave a reply” or you can write this down and talk about it at our next meeting. Once we have new leaders (see #1), you can talk to the new leaders and tell them your ideas. This is important because….

5. I (Miss Sarah) will be gone for two weeks in Surabaya for training with my organization, Peace Corps. Bu Christin will also be gone for 1 week to join my training in Surabaya. That means that on Thursday, October 18th you need to plan the activities for English Club. Remember, English Club is your club. What do you want to do in English Club? Think about it.

6. For our school’s birthday in November, the English Club will perform a drama. The drama is the story of TimunMas and Buto Ijo. Last week we had auditions. Here is the cast list:

- Mother: Deva (XI IPS 3)
- Father: To be announced later
- Hermit: Kamal (XI IPA 1)
- Buto Ijo: Fajar Satrio (XI IPS 2)
- Timun Mas: Nindy (XG)
- Narrators: Eli (XI IPA 5), Riska (XD), and more.

If you are one of these characters, you must practice your lines! Please see Bu Christin to get the audio file so you can listen to an example. Also, make sure you have the drama file so you can read your lines. If you are not on the list but you want to be a narrator, tell Bu Christin.

We also need to think about costumes and props and music for dancing. Can you help with this?

Fun Friday Question #3

Hi students! Remember, every Friday I (Miss Sarah) will post a question on this blog. I will give my answer to the question. Then, you give your answer in a comment (“leave a reply”). This is a fun way to practice your writing. Don’t be shy, it is okay to make mistakes. Just try your best!

Today’s Question: If you could be any animal, which animal would you be? Why?

Miss Sarah’s Answer: If I could be any animal, I would be a dolphin. Dolphins are very intelligent animals. Also, I love swimming and dolphins live in the water so they swim everyday. And dolphins use echolocation. Do you know what echolocation means? In bahasa indonesia the word is ekolokasi. It’s when you can find something using sound waves. You make a sound and then the sounds bounce back to you and you know if someone else is there. Wouldn’t it be amazing to be able to use echolocation?

Here is a picture that shows a dolphin using echolocation.

What a happy dolphin! :)

Fun Friday Question #2

Hi students! Remember, every Friday I (Miss Sarah) will post a question on this blog. I will give my answer to the question. Then, you give your answer in a comment (“leave a reply”). This is a fun way to practice your writing. Don’t be shy, it is okay to make mistakes. Just try your best!

Today’s Question: What is your favorite song? Why? If you have more than one favorite song, who is your favorite band or artist? Why?

Miss Sarah’s Answer: This is a hard question for me because I have many favorite songs. But right now my favorite song is “Blood Brothers” by Ingrid Michaelson. I like this song so much because it is fun to sing and has a good rhythm and it also has a good message. Ingrid sings about how even if we look different (I have white skin and you have brown skin), we are all still the same because we are human. That makes us all brothers and sisters. :)

You can listen to the song below. You can also download the song FOR FREE today (Friday) only by clicking on this link.
